Tommy P keeps rolling out the good stuff…
Switchfoot kick butt but there is more to their lyrics than most of us realize. If you check out the verse above, you might not realize how similar to things said by old Christian writers such as C.S. Lewis (yes, the Narnia guy). Have a look at these things he said:
|“We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”||“We were meant to live for so much more But we lost ourselves We want more than this world’s got to offer”|
|“If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.”||“And everything inside screams for second life”|
Singing Christian songs with wailing guitars and heavy drums, we often forget that the words we are singing are often re-packaged versions of super-wise old guys. If this teaches us anything, it is that:
- Sometimes old people say cool stuff.
- We should be reading these old saint, and milking their words for everything they are worth.
Culture is where we live, and we can’t just run away from it. Music is one particularly mind-blowingly awesome form of culture, but it would be a shame just to listen without thinking about what the song is actually saying. Maybe, if you are feeling creative, you could dig up some hectic old wisdom and put it into a song/painting/video of your own. If you’re after more from C.S. Lewis, try these links:
